A Weekend at Grand Lake, Oklahoma: Adventure and Family Fun
There’s something special about arriving at Grand Lake, Oklahoma. The moment we crossed over the bridge onto Monkey Island, rolling the windows down to breathe in the fresh lake air, we knew we were in for a fun weekend. The excitement of the open water, the promise of long, lazy boat days, and the anticipation of new memories with the family made every mile of the drive from Kansas City worth it.

Day 1: Arriving on Monkey Island
After settling into our cozy lakefront rental on Monkey Island, the first order of business was simple—exploring. One of our favorite parts of staying here was renting a golf cart and cruising around the island. It was the perfect way to get a feel for the area, wave to fellow lake lovers, and let the kids have a blast being silly along the way. Monkey Island has a charm of its own, with winding roads that lead to amazing lake views, unique local shops, and friendly communities that make you feel right at home.
Dinner that evening was at The Summit Restaurant, which has great views and delicious steaks. With an elevated vantage point overlooking the water, it’s the perfect place to watch the sun set over the lake. The atmosphere of the restaurant and its great service made it feel like a special occasion, even though it was just the beginning of our trip.

Day 2: Surfing, Boating, and Lake Adventures
Waking up early on Grand Lake is never a chore when the water is calling. We loaded up the boat, packed plenty of snacks, and set out for a full day on the lake. One of the best things about Grand Lake is the sheer amount of space—perfect for wake boarding, tubing, and, our favorite, wake surfing. The kids took turns perfecting their skills, while we enjoyed the endless fun waves. The calm morning water was ideal for getting in some practice, and as the day went on, we found ourselves venturing to different coves and scenic spots along the lake.
We made a mid-day stop at Dripping Springs, a popular area known for its cliffs and calm waters, perfect for anchoring the boat and floating around. The crystal-clear waters and secluded area made it feel like our own private paradise. We spent hours just lounging on the boat and jumping into the water.
For lunch, we grabbed a quick and tasty meal at Ugly’s Grill & Bar, where we had some great food and enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere. (The kids even got to feed their MASSIVE fish hanging out near the dock!) The grilled sandwiches and fresh-cut fries hit the spot after a morning of adventure, and the friendly service made us feel like regulars.
As the sun started to set, we took a slow cruise back, soaking in the golden light reflecting off the water. That evening, we headed to The Shebang, a restaurant with a fun atmosphere, great pizza, and even better energy. The eclectic decor, live music, and energy of the place made for a fun night.

Day 3: Relaxation and Family Fun
Breakfast at The Quarterdeck is the perfect way to start the day on Grand Lake, they had a delicious spread with a beautiful lakeside view. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic stack of fluffy pancakes, a hearty omelet, or their signature biscuits and gravy, they have it all. The laid-back atmosphere, friendly service, and hot coffee made it an easy favorite for our early risers. It’s the kind of spot where you can linger a little longer, soaking in the peaceful morning vibes before heading out for another day of adventure.
After breakfast, we checked out Har-Ber Village, an outdoor pioneer history museum that’s as educational as it is charming. With over 100 exhibits, it’s a fun glimpse into the past, featuring historic cabins, a working blacksmith shop, and even a one-room schoolhouse. The kids liked the hands-on activities, and we appreciated the chance to slow down and better understand the area’s rich history before heading back to the water for one last swim.
For a more relaxing afternoon, we spent some time at Bernice State Park, known for its sandy shoreline and great fishing spots. The peaceful environment was the perfect contrast to our high-energy boating adventures earlier in the weekend, giving us a chance to take in the natural beauty of Grand Lake at a slower pace.
Dinner on our final night we opted for Eddy’s Lakeside Bar, where we enjoyed seafood while overlooking the water. After dinner, we made one final visit to The Anchor, one of the best family-friendly spots on Monkey Island. With an arcade, a mini bowling alley, and a full bar for the adults, it was easy to spend hours here. The kids ran from game to game, challenging each other in basketball shootouts, while we enjoyed a little friendly competition on the air hockey table. The Anchor really has something for everyone, making it an easy favorite for families looking to unwind. We visited The Anchor really every night we were in town so the kids could meet other friends their age and have some fun while the adults got to hang out too. I highly recommend making it part of your stay if you are housed on Monkey Island!
