Exploring Lake Travis and Lake Austin with Kids

Austin, Texas, is known for its fun culture, live music scene, and culinary delights, but it’s also home to some beautiful natural attractions in Central Texas. Among these are Lake Travis and Lake Austin, two lakes that have lots of family-friendly activities perfect for a day trip. If you’re like me and visiting Austin with kids over the holiday season, this guide will help you make the most of your time at these iconic spots.

If you take a look at the map like I did and get confused about how these lakes are considered lakes and not rivers, you’re not alone. The lakes in Austin, Texas, are part of the Lower Colorado River system, which is a section of the Colorado River in Texas (not to be confused with the river of the same name in the western U.S.). The formation of these lakes is the result of a series of dams built along the river.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Colorado River Path: The Colorado River flows across central Texas, running roughly from west to east. It’s a key water source for the region.
  2. Dam Construction: Beginning in the 1930s, dams were constructed to control flooding, provide water for agriculture, and generate hydroelectric power. These dams create reservoirs, which are the lakes you see in the Austin area.
  3. The Lakes in Austin:
    • Lake Travis: The largest of the lakes in Austin, created by the Mansfield Dam (built in the 1940s).
    • Lake Austin: Formed by the Tom Miller Dam, this lake runs through central Austin and is much smaller than Lake Travis.
    • Lady Bird Lake (formerly known as Town Lake): Created by the Longhorn Dam in the 1960s, this is a much smaller lake, often used for recreation.
  4. Purpose of the Dams: These reservoirs were designed to help manage water flow, mitigate flooding, and support irrigation and urban water supply for the surrounding areas.

So, the lakes in Austin are all created by dams along the Lower Colorado River, each serving a different function in terms of water management, energy production, and recreation.

Over the Holiday this year, my family took a trip down to Austin and stayed at the VERY family friendly, highly recommended Hyatt Lost Pines Resort. This beautiful resort, located along the Colorado River in Bastrop, Texas, was the perfect spot for our family to relax, play, and celebrate the holiday season together.

For the kids, there was no shortage of fun activities. They loved all the activities, animals and just enjoying nature. We took full advantage of the outdoor adventures! The nature hikes were beautiful, and the kids loved the scavenger hunt along the trails. We also used the bikes daily, which was a big hit, and the resort’s pool with waterslide provided hours of fun for the whole family.

As the New Year approached, we celebrated in style with the family countdown party. The energy was contagious, with games, music, and even fireworks at 9pm (it was a family-friendly version, so no late-night for the kiddos). We ended the night with fire pit s’mores, the perfect way to ring in the new year.

If you’re looking for a place where both adults and kids can enjoy a holiday break, Hyatt Lost Pines is definitely a spot to consider! We’re already thinking about our next trip back!

While visiting Austin, we did make a day trip to see Lake Travis and Lake Austin, and here is what I would recommend you do if you’re a Lake Loving family like us.

Morning: Start Your Day with a Scenic Drive

Kick off your day at Mansfield Dam Park, located on the south shore of Lake Travis. This park is a favorite for its views of the dam and easy access to the water. While there is a small entrance fee, which include picnic areas, a boat ramp, and a swim cove. The park is also a popular spot for fishing, so don’t forget to bring your fishing gear if that’s your thing.

Pack a light breakfast or enjoy a coffee by the water. If you’re into photography, Mansfield Dam Park has excellent vantage points to capture the beauty of Lake Travis. The park’s facilities make it a great spot for families and solo travelers. Make sure to bring sunscreen and plenty of water to stay hydrated during your visit.

By now, everyone will be ready for lunch. Head to one of Lake Travis’s iconic restaurants, The Oasis on Lake Travis. Known as the “Sunset Capital of Texas,” The Oasis has panoramic views of the lake and a menu that caters to all ages.

Kid-Friendly Menu Options:

Early Afternoon: Explore Lake Austin

Afternoon Adventure at Emma Long Metropolitan Park

Spend your afternoon at Emma Long Metropolitan Park, one of Austin’s largest municipal parks. This park has a range of activities, from hiking to swimming, and has plenty of space for picnics and BBQs. While there is an entrance fee here too, the amenities and lakefront access make it worth the cost.

The sandy beach area at Emma Long is perfect for families who want to relax by the water. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, take advantage of the park’s hiking trails, which have great views of the landscape. Keep in mind, however, that Emma Long does not have a playground, so it’s best suited for older children or adults looking to enjoy nature. For those who love kayaking or paddle boarding, the calm waters here are great for both activities and we did see people taking out their speedboats and jet skis from the boat ramps nearby.
